LENS CHOICES

Your first progressive lenses: what to expect

Understand the different viewing zones and prepare for a personal fitting.

One lens, different viewing distances

Progressive lenses gradually change power from the upper distance area towards the lower near area. They can support distance, intermediate and reading needs without a visible dividing line. They are one option for presbyopia, the age-related reduction in near focusing ability.

Fitting is personal

Prescription, frame choice, how the frame sits and fitting measurements all influence the result. A virtual preview cannot provide a validated progressive fitting height. Choose the frame before final measurements, and have its position adjusted in person.

Give yourself time to learn the zones

Look through the appropriate area for your task and move your head naturally towards what you want to see. Some people need an adjustment period. Follow the practice’s advice, take care on stairs, and do not drive until your vision is clear and you feel comfortable.

Ask for help if it does not feel right

Persistent blur, discomfort or an awkward working posture deserves a follow-up. Bring the glasses and explain which distance or activity is difficult. Your optometrist can check the prescription, fitting and whether another lens design would better suit the task.
